Church of Agioi Apostoloi (Agioi Apostoloi)

Location: Pyrgi, Chios

The Church of Agioi Apostoloi belongs to the architectural form of "island's" octagons temples. It is a small copy of the catholic of Nea Moni and a well maintained Byzantine monument.

The exterior has rich ceramic decoration (rack films, brick arches). Inside the temple is adorned with frescoes of Antony Hunter Domestichou the Cretan, the year 1665.

An inscription above the main entrance of the temple says that the monk Simeon, who later became Metropolitan of Chios, built "fundamental" the church in 1564. Probably this is a refurbishing of the church.

The architectural and morphological details of the church, lead to the conclusion that the reconstruction took place in mid-14th century.

In 1985 began the maintenance of the frescoes of the church, and continue.

The monument is open to those wishing to visit. The church operates every year on June 29, Memorial Day of Saints Peter and Paul.

PANAGIA KRINA

Location: Vavili, Chios

The temple was constructed in the late 12th century. Owners of the original temple were Efstathios Kordatos and his wife Irini Doukaina Pepagomeni that belonged to the circle of the court of Constantinople and decorated the church with frescoes.

Also, survived in the church frescoes decorating the walls about five different times (early 14th century, 15th century, 16th century, 18th century. and 19th century) partially shed and maintenance.

With the devastating earthquake of 1881 collapsed part of the hemispherical dome of the main temple and a smaller one of narthex, which then reconstructed.

The church of Panagia Krini belongs to the architectural form of 'island's' octagonal churches and mimics a limited amount of the catholic of Nea Moni.

It consists of the main temple, the interior narthex and the ruined exterior narthex. The main temple and the interior narthex are modern and were built in the late 12th century, while the exterior narthex was added much later in the 18th century. For its most part, the interior is covered by frescoes of the 12th century.

During 1968 the roof was repaired, and in 1983 began fix work in the west wall of the exterior narthex and individual work on the roof of the church.

Between 1988 and 1995 took place exploratory incisions in the foundations of the eastern part of the church. From 1981 to 1984 were removed the frescoes of subsequent phases that covered the entire interior and found the initial phase of the 12th century. Part of frescoes that were removed is maintained (some out), while the other continued maintenance.

The temple remains closed to the public (open only in summer), because the ongoing maintenance work on frescoes and will soon begin restoration work at the building.

Removed frescoes of twelve prophets that belong to the second decoration stage of Byzantine era (14th century) are shown at the building of periodic  exhibitions 'Ioustiniani' at Frourio of Chios. Also, in the Byzantine Museum of Chios (Metzitie Tzami) are exposed detached frescoes which come from the wall painting of the temple that took place in 1734 by painter Michael Chomatza.

Early Christian basilica of Agios Isidoros

Location: Letsena, Chios Town, Chios

The early Christian basilica of Agios Isidoros was built in the mid-5th century AC, on earlier Roman building. They found five successive building phases over time: in first phase, the temple was constructed as a three-aisled basilica with a horseshoe-shaped niche in second phase was, also, three-aisled basilica with semicircular apse, while in third phase dating to the mid-6th century the basilica expanded and became too big dimensions.

In fourth phase the church became cruciform with a dome, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1389. In the last phase was added in the middle of the northern wall a minaret. Finally, the devastating earthquake of 1881 changed the church in ruins.
Part of the remains of the early Christian basilica is covered today by a later relatively small church, which has low horizontal concrete roof.

There are preserved mosaic floors of three building phases (from mid-5th century to the mid-6th century) with geometric motifs, and many architectural sculptures.

Inside the temple there is an underground vaulted crypt which once kept the relics of Agios Isidoros and Agia Meropi, who were martyred in Chios during the first Christian period.

The first excavation research at the site started by G. Sotiriou in 1918 and continued by A. Orlandos in 1928. In the summer of 1981 and 1982 took place a new excavation research.
